I decide to play with a little flash today. I used a few hot shoe flashes to light Mr.Red Hat here. One flash to camera left shot through an umbrella, one to camera right snooted with a red gel, and one with a blue gel to light the background.

Below is the same shot using only the ambient light of the room.

I like the first photograph much better. Oh yea and just in case you were wondering, both photos are straight out of camera.

We met our Bride and Groom on the beach this morning for a sunrise shoot. Here is a shot of the rings as we were leaving. The session was great, but man was it cold. It was about 34 degrees and we did wade out into the water a little while shooting. I have no problem doing what ever it takes to get a great photograph.

Above are wireless triggers, they allow a flash to be fired from across the room. A great way to move the flash off the camera. The question is, are they considered a new toy or a tool for our business? When you're a photographer and love what you do, they are both.

Paper necklace made the women of Jinja, Uganda.

A friend of ours, that we met on a mission trip in Botswana, has a ministry called "God is Grace". The ministry is to find women supporters in the US to sponsor a woman in Jinja, Uganda so that she can learn a trade and have the ability to feed her family.

The necklace above is an example of how the women of Jinja are learning to support their family. The necklaces are made of paper that has been tightly hand rolled to make the beads. The necklaces are then sealed to protect the paper from the elements. It is amazing the colors and styles that can be made from paper. Sometimes to make a photograph you have to do some strange things. For this shot I set the camera on a tripod, placed a hot shoe flash to camera right, and the camera was in self-timer mode with a five second delay. I clicked the shutter button and then laid on my back so I could throw the card up in to the light at the exact moment the flash fired.

How do you measure up to other photographers? When looking at other photographers' images, we tend to have a little voice inside deciding if we could create that image or not.

I try not to worry about how I measure up to other photographers because we all have a different view on life. That is one of the things that make photography so great. You can line up ten photographers and have them look at the same scene and you will get ten different photographs. God made each of us unique, so we all have our own style. View other photographers work, but remember to embrace your own style.

Day 84: Fence Post

Something caught my eye about this section of fence while I was walking today. Maybe it's the angle of the wood, the shadows from the trees behind it, or the fact that the post is still standing even though the rails are falling down. That reminds me that we all have fence posts in life. The rails represent our journey through life and the post would be something or someone the changes the path or supports us as we go.
As we start a new year, think back to the posts in your life that brought you to where you are now, and look forward to new ones in the future. Happy New Year everyone!

Remember the real reason for Christmas. To help remind us, we hang a stocking for Jesus on our tree. The note on it reads:

A Stocking for Jesus

Each Christmas we hang stocking with care,
And fill them with gifts for loved ones to share.
But do we forget that the first Christmas night
God gave us His Son who gave us His life?

A sacrifice so great... how can we repay?
We can say, "Thank you Jesus" on His birthday.
Hang a stocking for Jesus and fill it with love.
Do good deeds for others to thank God above.
